Want to Play Mermaids?

I don’t know if it’s the warm weather, or the sun shining through my blinds at 7am, but whatever it is, it’s making me want to ditch my layers upon layers of clothes and opt for short skirts and tiny tops. I swear my phone knows that summer is right around the corner, because all of a sudden my social media is flooded with this ‘mermaid,’ ‘Ibiza’ style characterized by sequins, shells, and shimmer. Maybe it’s because I’m a Cancer, but this style speaks to me like Aquamarine’s starfish earrings, whispering compliments in my ear as I swim towards this aesthetic. And one sequin at a time, I intend to live out my childhood dreams of becoming a mermaid this summer.
Channeling the fantasy of underwater creatures and the mystical beauty of the sea, mermaid style incorporates iridescent fabrics, flowing silhouettes and shimmering details that mimic playful elements of scales, pearls, and ocean waves. Think of clothing that literally reflects light, with materials like sequins and metallics, combined with loose-fitting designs that flow as you move, as if you were gliding through the tides of Ibiza. Ibiza has long been known for its relaxed yet glamorous vibe, perfect for transitioning from long days at the beach to late-night parties – no outfit change required. The versatility of this trend alone is enough for me to hop on board, or better yet swim alongside as this trend sails into summer.
With the growing demand for more eco-friendly fashion, the rise of this coastal, fantasy-inspired trend is making waves in the sustainable fashion industry. For example, designers are incorporating sustainable materials such as organic cotton and recycled fabrics into their designs. Fabrics like Econyl (a regenerated nylon made from discarded materials like old fishing nets, fabric scraps and industrial plastic) and Tencel (made from sustainably sourced wood pulp) are not only reducing waste, but are creating the luxurious, shimmering textures that are perfect for mermaid-inspired looks. Some avant-garde designers are even experimenting with fabrics made from seaweed or algae, really embracing the oceanic vibe.
As consumers, we can opt for more independent designers or second-hand shopping as these pieces accumulate on Depop, TikTok, and in vintage shops. Time and time again, I will promote second-hand shopping! Not only can we reduce our waste as consumers, but we can curate a closet that is full of unique and timeless pieces in supporting sustainable resale businesses. Again, I swear my phone listens to me, because my TikTok is flooded with independent and small-scale designers that specialize in this aesthetic. With many of these designers committed to the transparency of their brand, we can rely on ethical, small-batch production, local sourcing of materials, and a focus on craftsmanship and quality to ensure our pieces stand the test of time.
Facing the reality of graduation and the responsibilities of becoming an ‘adult,’ the mermaid aesthetic could not come at a better time – it’s the allure of escapism. As we yearn for a break from the mundane, we can embrace the freedom of this style and truly live out our mermaid fantasies while supporting sustainable fashion, because if you feel good… you look good! And with that, I leave you with one question: who wants to play mermaids this summer?
