Layering Saved My Summer Wardrobe

Writer: qsf340qsf340

One of the best things about living where I do is the ability to experience all four seasons in all their glory; from spring showers, summer heat, and autumn leaves to the first snowfall of winter. I appreciate the versatility of the Canadian climate, but continuously struggle with the notion of ‘seasonal’ wardrobes implying the need for 4 closets worth of clothing and reinventing yourself with each coming season. Living in a place that only experiences 2-3 months of hot summer weather, it seems like a waste to purchase an entirely new wardrobe for such minimal wear. Not to mention by the time the next summer season arrives, you’ve either physically or emotionally outgrown the majority of your wardrobe, only wearing pieces a handful of times. In hopes of expanding my summer wardrobe into the cooler seasons, I’ve been experimenting with layering this fall by incorporating summer pieces into my fall attire.

Of course you can layer tank tops under almost anything, but things can get super dynamic when you layer turtlenecks under button-ups or tights under micro shorts. Layering allows for increased versatility with your clothes, giving you the opportunity to experiment with new outfit combinations and play around with your personal style. Regardless of this creative expression and self discovery, layering reduces the need for seasonal wardrobes and extends the life of individual pieces by bringing lighter summer wear into the cooler seasons of autumn and winter. By maximizing the use of clothes within your existing closet, shopping inevitably becomes infrequent, further helping to minimize your overconsumption in the world of fashion.

While I’m not saying you should never add new pieces to your wardrobe, I’d like to place an emphasis on supporting sustainable brands and local businesses when that time comes, in hopes of minimizing the environmental impact of clothing production. A little personal tip – I guarantee tones of unique layering pieces from tiny scarfs and funky hats to leather jackets are flooding your local thrift stores! It’s the perfect way to simultaneously reduce your own fashion waste in a budget friendly way while supporting local businesses that are vital to environmental sustainability and our community character.

Layering has first hand saved my summer wardrobe from rotting away in my closet during those cooler months, while allowing me to freely experiment with my fashion sense in a completely environmentally sustainable way. Rather than ‘reinventing’ yourself with a new wardrobe each season, layering allows for more transitional phases of style where you won’t emotionally outgrow your pieces as quickly. And as an added bonus, it’ll keep you warm (and stylish) in the coldest of months right around the corner!

Ultimately, embracing the art of layering had changed my perspective of personal style and provided me with a more thoughtful, sustainable approach to seasonal fashion. By creating unique outfits from your existing closet and supporting local businesses and sustainable brands, it is possible to navigate seasonal trends with newly found creativity and environmental consciousness. You and you only have the power to develop a personal style that is both dynamic and sustainable for the upcoming cooler seasons!
