Have you ever looked at your favourite t-shirt or sweater and wondered what it is actually made of? Most of the clothes we wear are made from one of two types of fibres: natural or synthetic. Perhaps it’s the growing awareness of environmental impacts or the desire to make better choices that has prompted us to question whether the fibres in our clothes are doing more harm than good. So what exactly are the differences between natural and synthetic fibres?

Natural fibres like cotton, wool, and flax are renewable and biodegradable, making them generally more sustainable. However, their cultivation can be resource-intensive, often requiring large amounts of water, land, and sometimes pesticides, which can lead to soil degradation and water pollution. Organic cotton and other responsibly farmed fibres can reduce these impacts and improve sustainability.

Synthetic fibres, such as polyester and nylon, are derived from fossil fuels, non-biodegradable, and contribute to microplastic pollution. Their production is energy-intensive and emits greenhouse gases. Recycled synthetics can reduce some of these impacts but still pose challenges with microplastic production and end-of-life disposal being the main drawbacks. Overall, the environmental impact of any fiber depends on production methods, usage, and disposal practices.

When it comes down to choosing the “better” option, natural fibres generally have the edge over synthetic fibres because they are biodegradable and renewable, especially when sourced organically or sustainably. However, durability and resource-efficient use of recycled synthetics can make them a responsible choice in certain situations. Ultimately, the most sustainable approach combines mindful consumption, careful fibre selection, and extending the life of clothing through care, repair, and reuse.
